American Women’s Suffrage @100: Songs of Celebration & Struggle with Kristin Lems

August 26 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Celebrate the centennial of women’s suffrage with us at our NOW chapter’s virtual meeting at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 26, featuring famed feminist folksinger Kristin LemsHere’s the Zoom link and full call-in details are below:

Gaining the right to vote was a milestone in the liberation of women from centuries of inferior and subservient status, and the culmination of a long and massive struggle.  Let’s come together to celebrate our foremothers, and carry on their work.

Kristin Lems, one of our foremost feminist leaders, was on the front line of the battle to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and 80s, and her song, “Ballad of the ERA,” was the movement’s unofficial anthem.  Her many inspiring and hauntingly beautiful feminist songs include “For All Women In Struggle,” the famous “Mammary Glands,” and “Talking Gender Neutral Blues” (with the famous line “Hold your horses, they started to cry; I think I’ll hold my mares, said I.”)

New Yorker magazine called Kristin “a charmer in the most literal and least artificial sense of the word,” and Gloria Steinem called her “a one-woman argument against the notion that the women’s movement has no sense of humor.”  Kristin has recorded seven albums of original music and her songs appear in many songbooks, playlists, and musical productions.  Her classic song Ballad of the ERA is included in the 2019 Smithsonian/Folkways boxed set called The Social Power of Music.  Kristin founded the National Women’s Music Festival in 1974 and sings about women’s rights and women’s history around the country.  She has recently written a radio musical about her great grandmother’s relationship with Jane Addams and Hull House during the 1890s and the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair in Chicago.  Besides her musical and activist career, she is a professor of ESL/Bilingual Education, and one of the world’s authorities on the teaching of reading.

Visit Kristin’s website at kristinlems.com, and check out her recent interview on Start TV.  Amazon’s Music Unlimited and Apple Music are great ways to stream much of Kristin’s music, or purchase her music for download or on CD/vinyl at Goldenrod.com.
